This heavy clay pot can be filled with water,
like a bird feeder or office water dispenser.

Air pressure holds in the bulk of the water
until the level drops enough for air to enter,
refilling the dispensing reservoir at the bottom.

The reservoir has been repaired with red pottery.

It may have been used as a water dispenser for poultry.

But what was its original use?
Surely this elaborate decoration wasn’t for hens! Mystery object 1 - view 3

This page shows that they mined fireclay: http://www.rochdale-on-line.com/heritage/mines.htm.

In 1908, the manager was James Crowther:

Maybe they're connected with this Lancashire company, which still supplies gypsum and cement?
